Apple TV remote app for iPhone

Not supported No — Remote Pro does not control it

The Apple TV runs tvOS, which Remote Pro cannot reach. We are not going to sell you an app that cannot do the job — here is what does.

  • tvOS no

Remote Pro does not control Apple TV, and you do not need it to: iOS already has an Apple TV remote built into Control Centre. It is free, it is Apple’s own, and it types into tvOS text fields. Nothing third-party beats it.

The alternative

What to do instead

Remote Pro cannot control this one. These are the options that actually work, best first.

  1. 1

Swipe into Control Centre on your iPhone and tap the Apple TV Remote tile. If it is not there, add it in Settings → Control Centre → Apple TV Remote.

  2. 2

Tap the tile, pick your Apple TV from the list, and enter the 4-digit code it shows on screen. That happens once.

  3. 3

You now have the trackpad, menu, play/pause, Siri and — the good bit — your iPhone keyboard typing straight into tvOS search and password fields.

  4. 4

Nothing to install, nothing to buy. If the Apple TV is also plugged into a Samsung, Fire TV, Android TV or Roku television, Remote Pro can still control that television’s power, volume and input.

The honest part

What you should know before you install anything

Remote Pro controls four platforms: Samsung Tizen, Fire TV, Android TV / Google TV and Roku. Everything else — including every infrared-only television — is honestly out of scope, and we say so rather than let you find out after paying.

An iPhone has no infrared blaster, so a television that is only controllable by infrared cannot be controlled by any phone app — ours or anyone else’s. We say that on every page rather than hide it in a review reply.

There is a free official app

Apple’s own remote is already on your iPhone, in Control Centre — free, first-party, and it types into tvOS text fields. There is nothing third-party worth installing for an Apple TV, and we are not going to pretend there is.

Got a Samsung, Fire TV, Android TV or Roku in the house too?

That is what Remote Pro is for. It speaks those four platforms natively over your own WiFi — full D-pad, volume where the platform allows it, and a real iPhone keyboard for search. It will not control your Apple TV, and it will never claim to.
